Sporting News NHL preview schedule (SportingNews.com)
Notice a chill in the air? September arrives and bring the return of the National Hockey League -- on the ice, not in boardrooms, conventional halls or hearing chambers. Feel free to cheer. Sporting News notes the change in season with its 2010-11 Hockey yearbook, which previews the marathon to next June's crowning of a new Stanley Cup winner. To mark the occasion, SN provides online looks at all 30 teams, leading up to the season's start -- which again this year is in Europe. |
Ilya Kovalchuk admits to 'tense moments' during marathon signing process (SportingNews.com)
Ilya Kovalchuk, speaking for the first time since becoming the New Jersey Devils’ $100 million man—officially—early Saturday morning, told Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo! Sports that there were some tense moments during the marathon 49-day signing process, but "I’m happy everything worked out OK." Kovalchuk, in a phone interview from his native Russia, admitted there were moments of worry and fear as his original 17-year, $102 million contract was shot down by both the league and an arbitrator and the later 15-year, $100-million deal became a... |
Fredrik Modin said to have deal with Atlanta Thrashers (SportingNews.com)
Left winger Fredrik Modin is headed to the Atlanta Thrashers, according to the Swedish website Aftonbladet. It is believed he has signed a one-year contract. Financial terms were not available. Modin, 35, finished last season with the Los Angeles Kings, who acquired him on March 3 from the Columbus Blue Jackets. He appeared in 44 games last season, finished with five goals and six assists. Neither the Thrashers nor the Atlanta Journal-Constitution confirmed the deal. |
Thrashers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
A year after inviting free agent forward Maxim Afinogenov to camp on a tryout basis, the Thrashers are hoping the same invitation revives the career of hard-hitting defenseman Kyle McLaren.
McLaren, 33, hasn't played in the NHL since 2008 after being waived by the San Jose Sharks and sent to the AHL. Bringing McLaren to camp on a tryout basis won't cost the Thrashers anything and will allow new general manager Rick Dudley to assess his team's defensive needs.
If the 6-foot-4, 220-pound McLaren is able to return to the form that made him the ninth overall pick in 1995 by Boston, the Thrashers will surely keep him around. Even if he's not the dominant blueliner he once was, McLaren would add depth and experience as a fifth or sixth defenseman on a young Thrashers roster. |
KHL trying to lure Slava Kozlov (SportingNews.com)
Ilya Kovalchuk may not end up in the KHL but his good friend and longtime teammate Slava Kozlov just might. According to Pavel Lysenkov of Sovetsky Sport, the KHL is pushing hard to lure the unrestricted free agent winger away from the NHL. Lysenkov reports that four KHL teams are negotiating with Kozlov and Slava Fetisov, Kozlov’s former teammate in Detroit, is hoping he signs with CSKA. "He knows all the necessary phone numbers. If he decides to play for CSKA, he'll call," Fetisov told Lysenkov. |
Chelios finally hangs 'em up after 26 NHL seasons (AP)
Chris Chelios, the longest-tenured defenseman in NHL history, is finally hanging up his skates. After 26 NHL seasons and three Stanley Cups, Chelios announced his retirement Tuesday at the age of 48. "I guess I've been dreading this day for a long time," he said at a news conference in Detroit. |
Agent for Marc Staal: We want a deal with Rangers (SportingNews.com)
As negotiations between the New York Rangers and restricted free agent Marc Staal drag on into late August, rumors of pending offer sheets for the talented young defenseman have started to surface. But offer sheets aren’t the focus right now, said Staal agent Paul Krepelka of the Orr Hockey Group. “The report of an offer sheet is absolutely unfounded and our priority and focus is on finalizing a deal with the Rangers,” Krepelka wrote in an e-mail to Sporting News. |
