Training camp can be a balancing act, and for the Hurricanes that is bound to be the case on a few fronts.
There's the notion that the Hurricanes have to push themselves harder in the preseason, particularly compared to last season. General manager Jim Rutherford has been adamant that the wayward 2009-10 season was caused by the lackluster start to the season and the inability of the team to make the drastic recovery that was needed.
So that should mean an upgraded preseason agenda, an easier assignment this time around after missing the playoffs and the extra work and wear and tear that comes with that. The Hurricanes are eager to make amends for last season.
But a grueling preseason must be weighed against what comes after that for the Hurricanes. |

Chris Chelios, the longest-tenured defenseman in NHL history, is finally hanging up his skates. After 26 NHL seasons and three Stanley Cups, Chelios announced his retirement Tuesday at the age of 48. "I guess I've been dreading this day for a long time," he said at a news conference in Detroit. |

Aaron Ward, a member of three Stanley Cup championship teams, is retiring from the NHL after 13 seasons. Ward announced his retirement in a statement released through the NHL Players Association on Tuesday. Ward spent most of last season with the Carolina Hurricanes, where he won the Stanley Cup in 2006. |
