Daymond Langkow was cleared to start skating in the second half of August, the first step in his return from a neck injury suffered late last season. That's the good news.

But nobody is sure when the veteran Flames center will be ready to play again. Or even if he'll be able to play again. As of the final week of August, he wasn't allowed to lift weights or have any physical contact.

The Flames have a logjam of centers with Langkow, Olli Jokinen, Matt Stajan, Craig Conroy and Mikael Backlund all likely candidates to be with the team when the puck drops on the new season.
