Sporting News NHL preview schedule (SportingNews.com)
Notice a chill in the air? September arrives and bring the return of the National Hockey League -- on the ice, not in boardrooms, conventional halls or hearing chambers. Feel free to cheer. Sporting News notes the change in season with its 2010-11 Hockey yearbook, which previews the marathon to next June's crowning of a new Stanley Cup winner. To mark the occasion, SN provides online looks at all 30 teams, leading up to the season's start -- which again this year is in Europe. |
Avalanche Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Ryan O'Reilly acknowledges that his rookie season of a year ago took a toll both mentally and physically.
Counting playoffs, the 19-year-old center played in 87 games for the Avalanche—14 more than his previous career high in 2008-09 while with the Erie Otters in the Ontario Hockey League.
So O'Reilly took a month-long vacation after the season ended to recharge his batteries before preparing for the 2010-11 season.
"I've never really played that long of a season, so for me it came down to regrouping in order to keep that hunger you need to have," he said. "After the season you definitely need to relax, have fun and do the friends-and-family thing before you get back into it and prepare for training camp." O'Reilly purchased a home with his brother Cal... |
Avalanche re-sign forward Chris Stewart (SportingNews.com)
One down, one to go: The Colorado Avalanche signed restricted free agent Chris Stewart on Thursday and now turn their sights on Peter Mueller, their last major unsigned player. Both forwards are part of the team's youth movement and are 22. Stewart will be paid $2.5 million next season and $3.25 million in 2011-12, the Denver Post reports. He made $850,000 last season in the final year of his entry-level contract. The Avalanche have made it a priority to lock up-and-coming players into contracts. |
Avalanche sign F Chris Stewart to 2-year deal (AP)
The Colorado Avalanche remain committed to their youth movement, signing forward Chris Stewart to a two-year deal. The 22-year-old Stewart led the team with 28 goals last season and finished with 64 points. The deal's terms weren't disclosed. Colorado general manager Greg Sherman says the team is looking forward to seeing Stewart "build on what he started a year ago." The Avalanche... |
Agent: Paul Kariya won't play this season; concussion problem (SportingNews.com)
The reunion with Teemu Selanne will have to wait. Unrestricted free agent forward Paul Kariya won't play during the 2010-11 season, according to a statement released on Friday by his agent. "After being examined by concussion specialist Dr. Mark Lovell, Paul is not able to play hockey due to post-concussion syndrome," agent Don Baizley said in a release distributed by the NHLPA. According to the Orange County Register, Kariya, 35, was seen skating locally and Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray was considering bringing Kariya back to Anaheim to play... |
Agent for Marc Staal: We want a deal with Rangers (SportingNews.com)
As negotiations between the New York Rangers and restricted free agent Marc Staal drag on into late August, rumors of pending offer sheets for the talented young defenseman have started to surface. But offer sheets aren’t the focus right now, said Staal agent Paul Krepelka of the Orr Hockey Group. “The report of an offer sheet is absolutely unfounded and our priority and focus is on finalizing a deal with the Rangers,” Krepelka wrote in an e-mail to Sporting News. |
