Ty Conklin had a chance to solidify the backup goaltending position for the Red Wings, after Jimmy Howard suffered a broken right index finger that could idle him for more than two weeks.

He could have strung together several starts in a row. But now there's no telling when he'll be back in net. Conklin, who has struggled this season, was pulled Saturday after allowing three goals on nine shots in the first period of a 5-4 shootout loss at Edmonton.

It was a low point in his season. And now he is in danger of losing his job as the backup. Joey MacDonald, recalled from Grand Rapids (AHL) on Friday, was strong in relief, stopping 22 of 23 shots in the final two periods and overtime.
