Notice a chill in the air? September arrives and bring the return of the National Hockey League -- on the ice, not in boardrooms, conventional halls or hearing chambers. Feel free to cheer. Sporting News notes the change in season with its 2010-11 Hockey yearbook, which previews the marathon to next June's crowning of a new Stanley Cup winner. To mark the occasion, SN provides online looks at all 30 teams, leading up to the season's start -- which again this year is in Europe. |

Kirk Maltby moved closer to re-signing with the Detroit Red Wings with word Tuesday that GM Ken Holland expects to cut the veteran winger a one-year, two-way deal this week. Red Wings Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Justin Abdelkader is poised for his first full NHL season, and with his size and abrasiveness, he is expected to provide an element of grit on a skilled Red Wings team.
Abdelkader, who signed a two-year contract with the club on Aug. 23 that averages $787,000 a season, is slated to play either center or left wing on the fourth line. He brings a physical presence with his 6-foot-1, 215-pound frame and has the skating ability to provide a strong forecheck.
He also has some offensive upside. The club hopes the 2005 second-round pick from Michigan State will be a strong two-way forward for many years. He had three goals and three assists in 50 games with the Wings last season and was third on the team with 152 hits. "I just want to be in the lineup night in and night... |
Sabres give F Matt Ellis one-year, two-way deal (SportingNews.com)
Matt Ellis is the kind of forward Buffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff loves -- gritty, physical and a good locker-room presence. Critics would say Ellis is the perfect Ruff player because he's also a fourth-line winger who provides little offense. Fair or not, Ellis signed a one-year deal with the Sabres on Tuesday, his 29th birthday. The Sabres didn't disclose financial terms, but authoritative Capgeek.com reports the pact is for $625,000 at the NHL level and $105,000 if he slips to the AHL. |

Last season's left knee injury continues to haunt Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall, who had arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday. Doctors found a lateral meniscus tear, the Detroit Free Press reports. Red Wings GM Ken Holland welcomed the news, saying although the repair would limit Kronwall early in training camp the team expects him to be ready when its season opens Oct. 8. Anaheim Ducks forward Joffrey Lupul, a three-time 20-goal scorer, will miss training camp and probably the start of the 2010-11 NHL season while dealing with a blood infection in his back, the byproduct of surgery to repair a herniated disk last December. Lupul told the Orange County Register he had to stop training about a month ago because of discomfort in his back. Blood tests showed the infection had returned. Lupul was placed back on antibiotics and told to refrain from physical activity. |
