Do You Believe in Miracles? The Story of the 1980 U.S. Hockey Team
You don't need to know anything about hockey to be moved by this hourlong documentary about one of the greatest upsets in sports history: the United States' defeat of the vaunted Russian Olympic hockey team at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The film recounts the David vs. Goliath matchup between the Americans (essentially a group of college kids molded into a team by coach Herb Brooks, also the U.S. hockey coach in the 2002 Olympic games) and the Russians, professionals who had won four straight Olympic golds. The story is retold in interviews with the people who lived it, including Brooks and several of the American players, sportscaster Al Michaels (who uttered the title line as the game ended), and key Russian players. Do You Believe in Miracles? is a solid blend of sports and history that focuses on the human element in one of the great underdog victories of all time. --Marshall Fine |

NHL: All-Access!
This collection of film segments promises to show the viewer "the game behind the game," and by taking cameras into National Hockey League locker rooms and putting microphones out on the ice, it accomplishes just that. Features include coverage of a milestone, the night goaltender Patrick Roy set the record for career victories, and a segment focusing on ordinary games, as sensitive microphones pick up spirited comments uttered by players, coaches, and officials on the ice and on the bench. NHL veteran Ray Ferraro offers his perspective on how the game is really played, and some bone-crunching film footage punctuates his explanations of how fast the players are skating and how hard they really slam into each other. The camera enters the locker room to show techniques coaches use to motivate players, and officials are seen suiting up and preparing for a game in their dressing room. The officials also provide perspectives on their jobs, and how it has only gotten harder in recent years thanks to intensive coverage of every single NHL game. Wayne Gretzky's final NHL game and a tribute by the fans is chronicled, and after the game the Great One is seen literally hanging up his skates. Hockey's coveted Stanley Cup, the most remarkable trophy in sports, is the subject of a glowing tribute on this DVD produced in association with the National Hockey League. The fabled cup is all about tradition, and it is unusual because it is the only major sports trophy to contain all the names of the players on the teams who have won it. The addition of new silver panels engraved with each year's victors is the reason the cup's base has grown larger with the passing of decades. This documentary, hosted by comedian Denis Leary in an uncharacteristically respectful mood, features crackling game footage as well as interviews with players who explain their lifelong quest to skate around an arena victoriously holding the legendary trophy high above their heads.
