Notice a chill in the air? September arrives and bring the return of the National Hockey League -- on the ice, not in boardrooms, conventional halls or hearing chambers. Feel free to cheer. Sporting News notes the change in season with its 2010-11 Hockey yearbook, which previews the marathon to next June's crowning of a new Stanley Cup winner. To mark the occasion, SN provides online looks at all 30 teams, leading up to the season's start -- which again this year is in Europe. |

Canadiens fans show up in force for Jaroslav Halak farewell (SportingNews.com)
Montreal Canadiens fans turned out in force Saturday to salute Stanley Cup playoffs hero Jaroslav Halak at a farewell autograph session. Halak, who helped the Habs reach the Eastern Conference finals last spring, was traded in the offseason to the St. Louis Blues. That didn't deter Canadiens followers, as the Canadian Press reports more than 5,000 arrived for the appearance. Canadiens Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Goaltender Carey Price hasn't signed his new contract with the Canadiens, but the team is doing everything in its power to make sure that he knows he is No. 1.
The latest move came when the Canadiens traded Cedrick Desjardins, a second-team all-star in the American Hockey League last season, to the Tampa Bay Lightning for the NHL rights to Karri Ramo.
The Canadiens are telling people that they believe that the 26-year-old has gone as far as he can in his development, but they've also eliminated a possible source of controversy. The trade created controversy with the postseason hero being shipped out in favor of the team’s underachieving goalie of the future. |
