Pittsburgh Penguins start Sidney Crosby is closing on a trio of Montreal Canadiens in voting for the NHL all-star game. Montreal players lead all six starting spots on the Eastern Conference team as of Tuesday, and Crosby is within 65,000 votes of third-place forward Alex Tanguay (385,297). Canadiens Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
The Canadiens are hoping that some home cooking will help them turn things around in December. They are at the Bell Centre for 10 of their 14 games in December, beginning with a Tuesday night date against the Atlanta Thrashers.
The Canadiens have been struggling of late. A 3-2 home win over Buffalo Saturday night gave them two wins in their last three games, but they have lost eight of their last 13 games since starting the season with an 8-1-1 record.
Coach Guy Carbonneau is becoming frustrated with some of his star players, beginning with Alex Kovalev, who has gone 13 games without a goal. That's his longest drought since December 2004.
In the latest attempt to get Kovalev going, Carbonneau put him on a line with center Robert Lang. |
Habs score 3 in second period to beat Sabres (AP)

The Montreal Canadiens feel they have plenty of room for improvement despite a victorious start to the longest homestand in their 100 years of existence. Andrei Markov scored Montreal's third goal of the second period to send the Canadiens to a 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night. Andrei Kostitsyn and Steve Begin also scored in the middle period for Montreal.

Theodore stops 28 shots in Caps' 3-0 win (AP)

Jose Theodore tried to downplay the importance of his shutout against his old Montreal Canadiens teammates. Theodore, who spent parts of 10 seasons with Montreal before being traded to Colorado in March 2006, made 28 saves for the first shutout with Washington in the Capitals' 3-0 victory over the Canadiens on Friday night.

Canadiens beat Red Wings 3-1 (AP)

The Montreal Canadiens clogged up the neutral zone and Carey Price took care of almost everything that managed to slip through. Price made 32 saves, and Maxim Lapierre, Tomas Plekanec and Christopher Higgins scored second-period goals in Montreal's 3-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.

O'Byrne puts puck in own net, costing Canadiens (AP)

Ryan O'Byrne blamed himself for costing the Canadiens a point. He didn't blame the Montreal fans for booing him. O'Byrne allowed the tying goal when he put the puck in his own net on a delayed penalty, and Bill Guerin scored the shootout clincher for the New York Islanders in a 4-3 victory over Montreal on Monday night.

Another son of Patrick Roy faces suspension (AP)
Another son of hockey great Patrick Roy is facing disciplinary action for his on-ice behavior. Frederick Roy was suspended 15 games Monday by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for high-sticking during the Quebec Remparts' game against the Montreal Juniors on Friday. During a timeout, Roy, a forward with the Remparts, struck Montreal defenseman Vincent Bourgeois in the mouth. |
Wheeler, Thomas lead Bruins past Habs (AP)

The Boston Bruins caught a big break in the shootout to back up Tim Thomas' strong netminding on a night that the Montreal Canadiens honored one of the greatest goalies to play the game. Blake Wheeler scored on Boston's first shot in the tiebreaker and Thomas stopped all three Montreal attempts to give the Bruins a 3-2 win over the Canadiens, who retired Patrick Roy's No.
