Sporting News NHL preview schedule (SportingNews.com)
Notice a chill in the air? September arrives and bring the return of the National Hockey League -- on the ice, not in boardrooms, conventional halls or hearing chambers. Feel free to cheer. Sporting News notes the change in season with its 2010-11 Hockey yearbook, which previews the marathon to next June's crowning of a new Stanley Cup winner. To mark the occasion, SN provides online looks at all 30 teams, leading up to the season's start -- which again this year is in Europe.

Islanders Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Islanders brass moved quickly in late August to strongly refute published reports linking them to having interest in Stanley Cup-winning goalie Antti Niemi, who signed with San Jose instead.

Could that be another sign that the Isles finally appear satisfied with the progress being made by injury-plagued franchise netminder Rick DiPietro?

DiPietro, who has played just 13 games over the past two seasons because of multiple knee surgeries, recently said in a team-sponsored Internet question-and-answer session with fans that he resumed skating in early August with plans to be fully ready when training camp opens in mid-September.

"As far as the injury is concerned, each day I'm continuing to work on leg strength," DiPietro said.

Predators pad defense corps with Aaron Johnson (SportingNews.com)
At 27, defenseman Aaron Johnson has been around the block a few times in the NHL. His latest career turn came Tuesday, when he signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Nashville Predators. The accord, the Nashville Tennessean reports, will pay him $550,000 for NHL time and $105,000 for the Predators' AHL Milwaukee affiliate. Doug Weight confirms one-year deal with Islanders (SportingNews.com)
The verbal agreement came near the end of last season. But then New York Islanders GM Garth Snow was unavailable to meet. And then center and captain Doug Weight disappeared to rural Idaho for a bit. Finally, on Tuesday, the Islanders made the inevitable official. Weight is back for his 19th NHL season. He signed a one-year, $850,000 deal that he said can extend to more than $1 million with bonuses. Weight is excited to return to the Islanders, a team he believes can surprise doubters this season.

Penguins pass on Guerin, say Staal is battling injury (SportingNews.com)
At least one familiar face will be missing on Sept. 17 when the Pittsburgh Penguins opens training camp, and it could be two if center Jordan Staal’s sore right foot doesn’t pass muster in an upcoming medical evaluation. Gone for good, apparently, will be veteran winger Bill Guerin, who told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that GM Ray Shero has informed him he won’t be re-signed. Guerin played most of last season on the top line with Sidney Crosby and was a member of the top power play unit.

Penguins sign tough guy Arron Asham, ponder pairing Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal (SportingNews.com)
Forward Arron Asham signed a one-year, $700,000 deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday. An unrestricted free agent, Asham spent the past two seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. Asham's signing is seen as the latest sign that the Penguins are considering playing centers Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal on the same line. Asham, 32, had 10 goals and 14 assists last season. He is best known as a physical player with fighting skills. He had 126 penalty minutes in 72 games last season.
