Sporting News NHL preview schedule (SportingNews.com)
Notice a chill in the air? September arrives and bring the return of the National Hockey League -- on the ice, not in boardrooms, conventional halls or hearing chambers. Feel free to cheer. Sporting News notes the change in season with its 2010-11 Hockey yearbook, which previews the marathon to next June's crowning of a new Stanley Cup winner. To mark the occasion, SN provides online looks at all 30 teams, leading up to the season's start -- which again this year is in Europe. |
Rangers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
With training camp scheduled to open Sept. 17, the Rangers' roster mostly has taken shape.
That is, with one considerable exception.
Top defenseman Marc Staal remains unsigned as a restricted free agent as of late August, and all reports indicate it is no certainty that the former first-round pick will be signed in time for the Blueshirts' first practice in preparation for the 2010-11 season.
"If a player is not signed, I don't want him in camp," coach John Tortorella told the Bergen Record earlier this summer. "I just think it's nothing but a distraction. I don't have full say, but I think if Marc Staal is not signed, I don't think he should be at camp." There have been few updates from either side since Rangers GM Glen Sather likened the negotiations with... |
Rangers sign Tim Kennedy (AP)
The New York Rangers have agreed to terms with free agent forward Tim Kennedy on Monday. The 24-year-old had 10 goals and 16 assists last season with Buffalo in 78 games. He also had a goal and two assists in the playoff for the Sabres. Kennedy, who was a rookie last season, was a two-time team scoring leader at Michigan State and won the NCAA title with the Spartans in 2007. |
Tim Kennedy signs one-year deal with New York Rangers (SportingNews.com)
The New York Rangers announced Monday they have signed LW Tim Kennedy, who was bought out by the Buffalo Sabres earlier this summer after he won a $1 million arbitration decision. Kennedy, who scored 10 goals in 78 games for the Sabres last season, is expected to provide depth at a position that already features Brandon Dubinsky, Alexander Frolov, Sean Avery and tough guy Derek Boogaard. Kennedy, a Buffalo native, was stunned when he found out about the buyout but recently told the Buffalo News he was ready to move on. |
Agent for Marc Staal: We want a deal with Rangers (SportingNews.com)
As negotiations between the New York Rangers and restricted free agent Marc Staal drag on into late August, rumors of pending offer sheets for the talented young defenseman have started to surface. But offer sheets aren’t the focus right now, said Staal agent Paul Krepelka of the Orr Hockey Group. “The report of an offer sheet is absolutely unfounded and our priority and focus is on finalizing a deal with the Rangers,” Krepelka wrote in an e-mail to Sporting News. |
NHL has its share of problems (The Montreal Gazette)
I am excited, and I hope you are, too, that NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly went on record with "where hockey might be headed," supporting his pleasure with a flood of "who could have imagined" examples under his byline in Saturday's Gazette. |
3-time Stanley Cup winner Aaron Ward retires (AP)
Three-time Stanley Cup winner Aaron Ward is retiring after more than 13 NHL seasons. The 37-year-old defenseman became a free agent this summer and had knee surgery for the third time. He says he wasn't going to be ready for the upcoming season. Ward split last season with Carolina and Anaheim, recording one goal and 12 assists in 77 games. |
