Sporting News notes the change in season with its 2010-11 Hockey yearbook, which previews the marathon to next June's crowning of a new Stanley Cup winner. To mark the occasion, SN provides online looks at all 30 teams, leading up to the season's start -- which again this year is in Europe. |

Captain Daniel Alfredsson is getting an early start to the season.
Alfredsson began skating in early August—2 1/2 weeks ahead of his normal routine—to get ready for his 15th NHL season. Alfredsson, 37, feels the need for extra pre-camp preparation because of his age and also because he had surgery to repair a sports hernia in May. He says he is fully recovered from the injury.
"Just (wanted) to try it out and get on the ice a little bit more," he said. "I'm feeling pretty good, actually."
Alfredsson, who will once again be counted on to be the team's top right winger, power play catalyst, penalty killer and leader, will need some help in carrying the offense. |

Steve Downie's rise as an NHL player continued Wednesday as the Tampa Bay Lightning announced they signed the restricted free-agent winger to a two-year, $3.7 million deal. Not bad for a guy who early in his career was criticized for stupid penalties, foolish fights and a 20-game suspension. Downie, 23, showed maturity to go with his skill and toughness last season, his first with the Lightning, and finished with 22 goals, 24 assists, a team-best plus-14 and a 19.0 shooting percentage that was tied for fourth in the NHL. |

After two days of demonstrations, discussions and exchanging ideas at an ice rink in Toronto, nothing was decided -- officially. "My focus is on getting the hockey world to examine some things," Shanahan told The Globe and Mail. |
