Penguins Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
The Penguins have been dominant for the last four seasons largely because of their Big Three down the middle. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal are all entering the primes of their careers, but one of the Penguins' star centers might not be ready for the start of the season.
Staal miraculously returned to the lineup in the second round of the playoffs against Montreal only days after severing a tendon in his foot. The gifted two-way center played well in the final four games of the series, leading everyone to believe his injury wasn't as serious as originally believed.
As it turns out, the injury was indeed serious. Staal underwent an operation to correct the problem with his tendon but has endured an extremely difficult summer of rehabilitation. |

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Mike Comrie to a $500,000, one-year contract, giving them a proven scorer who might be capable of playing on one of their top three lines. The Penguins, looking for affordable scoring help because they have little salary cap space, signed forward Arron Asham to a $700,000, one-year contract two weeks ago. |
Penguins sign forward Mike Comrie to one-year deal (SportingNews.com)
The Pittsburgh Penguins have found a new veteran forward to play with Sidney Crosby. On Friday, the Penguins announced that forward Mike Comrie signed a one-year, $500,000 to play in Pittsburgh. As a veteran free agent forward, Comrie had to weigh more lucrative offers from non-contenders against the appeal of playing for the Stanley Cup. He chose the contender. “I'm excited. It was definitely a hockey decision,” Comrie told the Globe and Mail. “I wanted to go to a great team and be a part of an organization like Pittsburgh and be able to compete for a... |
Pens' Staal slowed by foot infection (AP)
Penguins forward Jordan Staal is expected to miss the start of training camp as he recovers from an infection to his right foot, which was severely injured during the NHL playoffs. Staal's offseason preparation has been hampered by the infection, which developed after he twice had surgery to repair a lacerated tendon. |
Penguins going with youth, won't re-sign F Guerin (AP)
The Pittsburgh Penguins won't re-sign forward Bill Guerin, preferring instead to give several young forwards a chance to play on one of their top lines. The 39-year-old Guerin scored 21 goals last season and had four more during the playoffs while often playing on Sidney Crosby's line. He has 429 goals and 427 assists in 1,263 career games with eight teams, starting with New Jersey in the... |
Penguins pass on Guerin, say Staal is battling injury (SportingNews.com)
At least one familiar face will be missing on Sept. 17 when the Pittsburgh Penguins opens training camp, and it could be two if center Jordan Staal’s sore right foot doesn’t pass muster in an upcoming medical evaluation. Gone for good, apparently, will be veteran winger Bill Guerin, who told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that GM Ray Shero has informed him he won’t be re-signed. Guerin played most of last season on the top line with Sidney Crosby and was a member of the top power play unit. |
Free agent Willie Mitchell signs with Kings (SportingNews.com)
Defenseman Willie Mitchell, perhaps the top remaining unrestricted free agent not named Ilya Kovalchuk on the market, signed a two-year, $7 million contract with the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday. Mitchell, 33, had made a free-agent tour over the past week and a half, visiting the Kings, San Jose Sharks and Washington Capitals while retaining interest in the Vancouver Canucks, for whom he has played the past four seasons. Mitchell appears fully recovered from a season-ending concussion in mid-January. |
