Sporting News NHL preview schedule (SportingNews.com)
Notice a chill in the air? September arrives and bring the return of the National Hockey League -- on the ice, not in boardrooms, conventional halls or hearing chambers. Feel free to cheer. Sporting News notes the change in season with its 2010-11 Hockey yearbook, which previews the marathon to next June's crowning of a new Stanley Cup winner. To mark the occasion, SN provides online looks at all 30 teams, leading up to the season's start -- which again this year is in Europe. |
Jonathan Cheechoo gets tryout with Dallas Stars (SportingNews.com)
Right winger Jonathan Cheechoo is headed back out West. The Dallas Stars announced Saturday that the former San Jose Sharks standout has accepted a tryout invitation. "We're pleased that Jonathan has accepted our invitation to come to our training camp," Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk said in a release. "He has shown the ability to be an effective scorer in this league." Cheechoo's career descent continued last season after he was traded to the Ottawa Senators in the deal that sent Dany Heatley to San Jose. |
Sharks say Niemi was too good to pass up (SportingNews.com)
It was early August when the Chicago Blackhawks declined to pay Antti Niemi the $2.75 million he was awarded in arbitration. He became an unrestricted free agent, one month after other free-agent goalies had begun their search for starting jobs. Or as his agent put it, it was like selling a big-screen television the day after the Super Bowl. Not the best timing. “But at the same time, he’s a pretty good player,” Niemi’s agent Bill Zito told Sporting News. |
Sharks Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
So much for general manager Doug Wilson's insistence that the Sharks would be just fine with a goaltending tandem of newcomer Antero Niittymaki and their backup last season, Thomas Greiss.
In a classic case of "If you can't beat him, sign him," the Sharks grabbed Antti Niemi, the Chicago Blackhawks' goalie on their run to the Stanley Cup, for the relatively inexpensive price of $2 million for one year.
Niemi had been awarded a $2.75 million salary by an arbitrator, and the Blackhawks—beset by salary cap woes—let him leave as a free agent rather than pay that amount.
Suddenly, the Sharks are overloaded with netminders, and barring injury one of them will have to play in the minor leagues or go elsewhere. |
Sharks sign G Antti Niemi to 1-year deal (AP)
The San Jose Sharks signed the goalie who helped knock them out of the playoffs, agreeing to a one-year, $2 million deal with Antti Niemi on Thursday. Niemi joins fellow Finnish netminder Antero Niittymaki in San Jose as the replacements for longtime starter Evgeni Nabokov. Niittymaki signed a two-year, $4 million deal on the first day of free agency in July. |
Antti Niemi signs with San Jose Sharks (SportingNews.com)
Antti Niemi is headed to San Jose. The Sharks confirmed Thursday morning that the Stanley Cup-winning goalie will get a one-year, $2 million contract, as reported by Sporting News on Wednesday. The Blackhawks, while shedding money because of salary cap issues, parted ways with Niemi after he was awarded $2.75 million in arbitration. Now, he heads to a San Jose team that could be one of Chicago's biggest challengers in the Western Conference. He will team with goalie Antero Niittymaki, who was signed to a two-year, $4 million contract by the Sharks on the... |
Sharks CEO Jamison steps down from job (AP)
San Jose Sharks CEO Greg Jamison is stepping down from his job running the day-to-day operations of the club. The team announced Wednesday that Jamison's last day as CEO will be Oct. 1. A search for a replacement will begin soon. Jamison will remain part of the ownership and will be the team's representative on the NHL's Board of Governors. |
Free agent Willie Mitchell signs with Kings (SportingNews.com)
Defenseman Willie Mitchell, perhaps the top remaining unrestricted free agent not named Ilya Kovalchuk on the market, signed a two-year, $7 million contract with the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday. Mitchell, 33, had made a free-agent tour over the past week and a half, visiting the Kings, San Jose Sharks and Washington Capitals while retaining interest in the Vancouver Canucks, for whom he has played the past four seasons. Mitchell appears fully recovered from a season-ending concussion in mid-January. |
