Sporting News NHL preview schedule (SportingNews.com)
Notice a chill in the air? September arrives and bring the return of the National Hockey League -- on the ice, not in boardrooms, conventional halls or hearing chambers. Feel free to cheer. Sporting News notes the change in season with its 2010-11 Hockey yearbook, which previews the marathon to next June's crowning of a new Stanley Cup winner. To mark the occasion, SN provides online looks at all 30 teams, leading up to the season's start -- which again this year is in Europe. |
Canadiens fans show up in force for Jaroslav Halak farewell (SportingNews.com)
Montreal Canadiens fans turned out in force Saturday to salute Stanley Cup playoffs hero Jaroslav Halak at a farewell autograph session. Halak, who helped the Habs reach the Eastern Conference finals last spring, was traded in the offseason to the St. Louis Blues. That didn't deter Canadiens followers, as the Canadian Press reports more than 5,000 arrived for the appearance. Because of the crowd, the session was extended by 90 minutes from the scheduled two hours. |
Blues Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
As Blues players trickled into St. Louis and begin to hold informal workouts at the club's practice facility, there is one glaring absence.
There's no Keith Tkachuk around cracking jokes.
After nine seasons with the Blues, including a return to the team in 2007 after being traded to the Atlanta Thrashers, Tkachuk announced his retirement after last season. He's been such a part of the fabric of the Blues' locker room that it seems something is missing.
"It's different," Blues defenseman Barret Jackman said. "He's a character guy, he's always talking, he's always making everybody feel welcome. That's a big voice that's missing."
There seem to be some valid questions about where the Blues' leadership will come from this season. |
Carey Price signs extension with Canadiens (SportingNews.com)
Carey Price, who played second fiddle to Jaroslav Halak last spring during the Montreal Canadiens' surprising playoff run to the Stanley Cup finals, has agreed to a two-year contract extension with the team. Price likely will inherit the starting job entering the season, thanks to an offseason deal that sent Halak to the St. Louis Blues for two prospects. The trade created controversy with the postseason hero being shipped out in favor of the team’s underachieving goalie of the future. |
Phoenix Coyotes re-sign free-agent F Lee Stempniak (SportingNews.com)
The NHL free-agent market's top remaining goal scorer not named Ilya Kovalchuk is staying in Arizona. The Phoenix Coyotes re-signed unrestricted free agent Lee Stempniak to a two-year contract, the Arizona Republic reported on its website late Sunday. Stempniak will be paid $3.8 million for the two years, according to media reports -- $1.5 million for 2010-11, $2.3 million for 2011-12. His cap hit is $1.9 million according to capgeek.com. "We are very pleased to have signed Lee to a two-year contract," GM Don Maloney said in a statement. |
Agent: Paul Kariya won't play this season; concussion problem (SportingNews.com)
The reunion with Teemu Selanne will have to wait. Unrestricted free agent forward Paul Kariya won't play during the 2010-11 season, according to a statement released on Friday by his agent. "After being examined by concussion specialist Dr. Mark Lovell, Paul is not able to play hockey due to post-concussion syndrome," agent Don Baizley said in a release distributed by the NHLPA. According to the Orange County Register, Kariya, 35, was seen skating locally and Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray was considering bringing Kariya back to Anaheim to play... |

Canucks sign free-agent prospect Billy Sweatt (SportingNews.com)
Winger Billy Sweatt signed with the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday, joining his brother in the organization after failing to reach accord with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Sweatt, 21, was an unrestricted free agent. Contract terms were not immediately available. The Leafs acquired Sweatt's right in a summer trade that brought them Kris Versteeg from the Blackhawks. They let Sweatt hit the market on Monday amid acrimony between GM Brian Burke and Sweatt's handler. |
