Sporting News NHL preview schedule (SportingNews.com)
Notice a chill in the air? September arrives and bring the return of the National Hockey League -- on the ice, not in boardrooms, conventional halls or hearing chambers. Feel free to cheer. Sporting News notes the change in season with its 2010-11 Hockey yearbook, which previews the marathon to next June's crowning of a new Stanley Cup winner. To mark the occasion, SN provides online looks at all 30 teams, leading up to the season's start -- which again this year is in Europe.

Lightning Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Center Vinny Lecavalier underwent knee surgery on Aug. 24. The Lightning hope those words are not uttered again anytime soon.

The procedure, which was performed by team physician Dr. Ira Guttentag in Tampa, was considered minor and more preventative than any kind of a lingering issue. It was believed Lecavalier had a partially torn meniscus before the surgery, but that turned out not to be the case.

The recovery time is expected to be 3-4 weeks, meaning Lecavalier is expected to be ready for the start of training camp when it opens on Sept. 17.

"I wouldn't categorize this as a setback," general manager Steve Yzerman said. "I went through it myself as a player. Over the course of a long career, the minutes pile up and these things happen."

Lecavalier, who has been...

Antti Niemi is headed to San Jose. The Sharks confirmed Thursday morning that the Stanley Cup-winning goalie will get a one-year, $2 million contract, as reported by Sporting News on Wednesday. The Blackhawks, while shedding money because of salary cap issues, parted ways with Niemi after he was awarded $2.75 million in arbitration. Now, he heads to a San Jose team that could be one of Chicago's biggest challengers in the Western Conference. He will team with goalie Antero Niittymaki, who was signed to a two-year, $4 million contract by the Sharks on the...

Steve Downie gets two-year deal with Tampa Bay Lightning (SportingNews.com)
Steve Downie's rise as an NHL player continued Wednesday as the Tampa Bay Lightning announced they signed the restricted free-agent winger to a two-year, $3.7 million deal. Not bad for a guy who early in his career was criticized for stupid penalties, foolish fights and a 20-game suspension. Downie, 23, showed maturity to go with his skill and toughness last season, his first with the Lightning, and finished with 22 goals, 24 assists, a team-best plus-14 and a 19.0 shooting percentage that was tied for fourth in the NHL.

Lecavalier's surgery called successful (SportingNews.com)
Tampa Bay Lightning captain Vinny Lecavalier had successful arthroscopic knee surgery Tuesday in Tampa, and the team announced he should be ready for training camp when it opens Sept. 17. Lecavalier, 30, did not have a torn meniscus, as originally believed, so orthopedic surgeon Ira Guttentag went ahead and cleaned out the joint. The procedure was scheduled when Lecavalier told team officials he was experiencing irritation in his knee while skating—and it wasn’t getting any better.

Vincent Lecavalier knee surgery finds no tissue tear (SportingNews.com)
Vincent Lecavalier's knee surgery went off without a hitch Tuesday, and doctors reported they didn't find a torn meniscus in his left knee as had been expected. Instead, the procedure was done as a cleanup on the aching joint. Recovery from the arthroscopic procedure will take at least three weeks. Lecavalier, captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning, is expected to be ready for Sept. 17's opening of training camp. Lecavalier, 30, told team officials that he had been experiencing some irritation in his knee while skating and it wasn’t going away, Damian...
